2000 Whale Identification Photos

Included here are identification photos taken by Capt. Larry Dupler during the summer of 2000.  These photos were all taken in the Juneau area of Southeast Alaska between May 1 and October 31.  Additional information is provided for  each photo as available.  Photos are in 2 sections, humpback whales and orcas.

Humpback Sighting Details and Information

Id No. 103, 112 and 125 are of the same whale.  Seen consistently during June, July and early August since 1994.  Sightings have been less consist in 1999 and 2000.  2000 sightings include three days consecutive in mid May, one in June, two in July, one in August, and two days consecutive in mid October.  Nick name Willie.

Id No. 106 and 111 are of the same whale.  Observed consistently in Shelter Island and Benjamin Island area during July, August, September and October 2000.  Observed occasionally in July and August of 1999. Nick name Chomper.

Id No. 113 was observed consistently in July, August, September, October and early November in Shelter Island and Benjamin Island area.  Nick name Spot

Id Nos. 120 and 123 are of the same animal.  Has a distinctive triangular shaped patch at the base of the fluke that appears to be a growth of some sort.  This whale was first sighted here in late July of 1999.  At least one sighting per month has been confirmed here in the Juneau area every month since then.  Verification that this whale spent the winter in Southeast Alaska and did not migrate South.  It was still here in early November of 2000.  Nick name Diamond.

Id No. 127 is a consistent visitor to the Juneau area every year.  Seldom stays more than two or three days at a time.  Usually sighted sporadically in June, July and August.  In 2000 it was seen here in May, July, August and October.  Nick name Arrow.
